Body Modifications | Unconventional Family Portraits

(This project was a collaboration between Leah Rama, Walter Green, Ovunç Baydemir, and Joseph Dixon for SCAD) This project explores fashion theories that show we communicate and identify with others through visual cues and fashion choices, which include body modifications, such as piercings, tattoos, or colorful hair. We wanted to represent this tacit relationship between people with shared body modifications by doing a series of open-call family portraits on campus. By placing strangers with shared body modifications in a cheesy, traditional family portrait setting, we broke the social barriers that reinforce social division, and redefined family by drawing out this unspoken shared experience and bond we all experience when we see others with whom we share similar fashion choices.
